All that glitters is not gold, or so the story goes. But when it came to finding the ideal location to offer their team a second base across Ireland, precious metals specialists, Goldcore, struck gold (!) with their decision to grow their team from the gTeic Spiddal Hub.
A move inspired by the pandemic, Goldcore’s CEO, David Russel, explains: ‘Around 2019, we had started to look at testing remote working to ensure we could operate remotely if needed. So when Covid hit, we were ahead of the curve, having that set-up in place. ‘Plus, one of our heads of department is originally from Galway and wanted to move back from Dublin. We had our proof of concept that working remotely or in different places worked for us as a company by then, so why not make the move?’
With Goldcore’s Spiddal team now based in the heart of the Gaeltacht, the company’s move was an inspired one. Part of a wider team of 17 with 13 members based in Ireland and four additional members of the team working abroad, the Galway Hub offers Goldcore the ability to have their own office space within the West – and also avail of the support of the local community where needed. David explains:
‘That head of department is a gaeilgeoir, so when we started to look for offices, the space in gTeic was really appealing. They’ve given us huge flexibility and support since we’ve started there, and the community around the Hub has been so supportive. An added bonus? ‘It’s also allowed us to embrace that aspect of our Irish culture,’ David says.
With clients around the globe, the team in Spiddal work to support the business’s day-to-day operations, which offers clients a variety of precious metals for investment, along with secure storage options to store those metals in third-party locations, from Ireland to Singapore. A dynamic industry, David explains: ‘What we have in Spiddal is our back-office team, and since we’ve moved there, we’ve found great people locally, and we’ve actually grown our team there to include our finance offering as well.’
‘It’s a new way of working – there are so many people who want a better work/life balance and the option to have shorter commute times. It’s great as a company to be able to provide that.’ ‘We find that it really improves the energy and morale of the team too.’ As for company culture, the team is happy to swap locations and make a day-trip whenever an in-person get together is in the diary.
‘Our teams make sure to meet up regularly,’ David notes. ‘We’re not far from each other, you can make the trip to Galway or vice versa and back in a day, so we often meet up in either location.’ Better yet? The Spiddal base provides a particularly spectacular backdrop for company catch-ups. David adds: ‘It’s in a beautiful part of the country, looking directly out onto the Aran Islands!’
So successful has the move been, Goldcore are currently in the process of getting ready to open another Irish base. This time, further north. David says: ‘We’re opening another office shortly in the Donegal gTeic at Gweedore. It will be a similar model, where we have a senior member of our team who’s keen to move back, so we’ll build a team around them there.’ Exciting times for Goldcore!
